Outlier Media
Noah Kincade coordinates the Detroit Documenters program for Outlier Media, a hyperlocal, mission-driven newsroom serving the information needs of Detroiters. As a part of the larger Documenters Network created by Chicago journalism lab City Bureau, residents are trained and paid to attend and document local public meetings through written notes, multimedia recordings and live social media coverage. As coordinator, Noah teaches Detroiters how to watchdog their local government by documenting meetings that might otherwise go unreported. Before joining Outlier, Noah pursued a career in music and event production, leaving his home state of Michigan to plant roots in San Francisco, California. There, he developed his skills as a live sound engineer and eventually partnered with a few friends to operate an all-ages concert venue in the heart of the city. While in San Francisco, Noah spent several years pursuing tenant claims against a negligent landlord. That experience and time spent interacting with the city’s rent board reinforced his belief that local authorities can have direct and meaningful impact on people’s lives. Noah moved to Detroit’s eastside in 2020 with his partner and their two feline boys. Through his work with Outlier Media and the Documenters Network, Noah seeks to strengthen civic engagement by equipping Detroiters with the tools they need to improve their lives and hold power to account.
