The high seas are too vast to police and answer to no single government. For more than a decade, investigative journalist Ian Urbina has reported from that lawless expanse, documenting sea slaves, oil dumpers, mercenaries, poachers, vigilante conservationists and stowaways cast adrift.

Rhapsody on the Outlaw Ocean turns that reporting into an animated documentary told in rap, with lyrics and music by Will Segal and vocals by members of the Broadway cast of Hamilton, among them Brandon Victor Dixon and Sydney James Harcourt. Its stories are drawn from Urbina's published investigations.

Inventive in form and anchored in fact, the film grapples with a question every reporter faces: how do you convey atrocity with emotional accuracy when conventional tools fall short? The answer is unlike anything else on this year's slate.

A finalist for investigative work at the 2026 Jackson Wild Media Awards.

This film is being shown with Rescue, with a combined Q&A with filmmakers Ian Urbina, Will Segal and Andreas Dalsgaard (producer, Rescue) following both films.
