Directors Stephanie Etienne and Kanika Harris follow the journeys of three Black women as they navigate the perilous road to motherhood against a backdrop of systemic inequities in healthcare based on race. Drawing from personal loss, resistance, and hope, the film reveals the devastating reality that Black mothers in the United States face exponentially higher rates of maternal and infant mortality, regardless of education or income.
Etienne and Harris, both birth workers and mothers, bring an insider’s perspective and compassion to stories often overlooked—spotlighting the struggle for birth equity and the enduring strength of Black families and communities. Through candid interviews and poetic visuals, Listen to Me surfaces new societal fault lines: the broken trust between patients and institutions, and the urgent need for accountability in modern medicine.
