Censored in Beijing

As China’s economy has grown, so has its muscle to shape its image abroad. Over the last 20 years, Hollywood studios have censored dozens of films, removing elements that could offend the Chinese Communist Party and adding elements that please it. Because of the size of the Chinese market, Chinese government investments in Hollywood, and its willingness to trade access for acquiescence, Hollywood producers, directors, and executives increasingly allow Beijing to dictate how China is portrayed in Hollywood. What does this mean for free expression in Hollywood, and for the film industry’s appetite for investigative storytelling?
