In Kenya's tea highlands, land seized from Kikuyu families under British colonial rule still grows tea for some of the world's largest corporations. When a Kikuyu man named Mungai brings a legal petition against the British Crown and the tea industry to reclaim his family's ancestral land, Nairobi journalist Bea Wangondu sets out to cover what looks like a long-overdue step toward justice. The story refuses to stay contained. Her reporting leads from plantation towns to corporate headquarters in London, into allegations of abuse and land grabs by politicians including Kenya’s president, and toward secrets her own family has kept hidden. As the people she is investigating start pushing back, the danger to her becomes all too real.

Co-directed with Andrew H. Brown, Kikuyu Land premiered in competition at Sundance and unfolds like a crime thriller, one in which the past is never quite past and the reporter cannot keep herself out of the story.
