The Big Social

2:00pm
-3:00pm

Against the backdrop of The Social Dilemma, which some critics have called one of the most important films of our time, this panel will examine Big Social. Though cloaked in the language of idealism and community, the business model of Big Social relies on algorithms that intentionally foster addiction, altering the neural connections in young children, and exploit user behavior with chilling indifference to privacy, public safety and health. The same mechanisms that deliver targeted ads also push conspiracy mongers, extremists, and peddlers of fake news, which travels six times faster than real news. The perils are only now dawning on society and lawmakers. Is it too late?
