Sig Libowitz is the Program Director of the Johns Hopkins Graduate Film and Media Program, as well as a Senior Lecturer at the University.
A filmmaker, attorney, producer, writer, actor, teacher, and former studio and production executive in Hollywood and New York, Libowitz wrote and produced The Response, which was shortlisted for an Academy Award (Best Short Film, Live Action) and won the American Bar Association’s Silver Gavel Award as Best of the Year in Drama and Literature. The film was screened for the Pentagon, Congress, West Point, the Department of Justice, Oxford University and the French Embassy among others.
Libowitz also produced and served as legal counsel for At Middleton, a feature romantic comedy starring Academy Award nominees Andy Garcia and Vera Farmiga, and was the executive-in-charge of production for In the Bedroom, which was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay (Adapted). He previously served as the Vice-President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions at Paramount Classics, Director of Production at Film Four, and as a Production Executive at Good Machine (now Focus Features).
Since 2009, Libowitz has lectured and served on panels across the U.S. and England focused on political cinema, national security and human rights, intellectual property and the business of film, and copyright issues. He has guest lectured at Harvard, Columbia School of Law, Oxford, William & Mary, the University of London, Washington University (St. Louis), the Chautauqua Institution, and the U.S. Army JAG School, among others. Libowitz has served as an adjunct professor at Towson University, Stevenson University, and George Washington University.
As an attorney, Libowitz focuses on entertainment and intellectual property issues, internal investigations, and national security matters. As an actor, Libowitz was a recurring guest star on both The Sopranos and Law & Order, and starred in a number of television pilots and national commercials. He played a featured role opposite Ryan Gosling in The Believer, which won Best Feature at the Sundance Film Festival.
Libowitz is a founding board member of the Maryland Film Industry Coalition and has testified several times before both chambers of the Maryland legislature on the benefits and issues surrounding state tax incentives for film and television production.
