Investigative Filmmaking Under Fire: The Holly, a Case Study

November 2, 2023
11:00am
- 12:00pm
MLK Library Event Space, 5th floor

The Holly documentary goes deep inside a gentrifying community in Denver, where a shooting case involving an activist exposes the political machinations of urban development and the city’s gang activity. From production all the way through distribution, a variety of legal issues threatened to shut the film down. In this session, we take a look at the legalities of filming in a courtroom, what to do when you’re being sued by people in the film, and, ultimately, ensuring the safety of the filmmaker and their team. Director Julian Rubinstein is joined by his attorney, Rob Guttierez. Moderated by Katie Townsend, Deputy Executive Director and Legal Director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.

Double Exposure offers a variety of festival passes that provide attendees with priority access to a range of events. We also offer a limited number of standalone tickets to individual events, providing a more flexible way to participate.
