Though they come from different cultures, and often bring different approaches to their work, investigative documentary filmmakers and journalists have much in common; they both understand their work as serving the public good, they both believe in accuracy and fairness, and sometimes they both find themselves following the same story. This panel will examine one such case: the TM Landry Prep School and the controversial, and apparently fraudulent methods that its founder took to place its students in elite colleges. What kinds of relationships with the sources or subjects did both teams cultivate, and what were the different timelines or metabolisms of the pieces? What are the particular ethical considerations when immortalizing young people on film, particularly when a scandal is unfolding, and how might this differ in an investigative news piece destined for print? This panel will explore how the various approaches and frameworks for these pieces alter or influence the ways they are produced as well as consumed by audiences.
